Pride Month Spotlight: Fenway Health – A Legacy of Care and Advocacy

This Pride Month, we honor not only the vibrant spirit of LGBTQI+ communities but also the institutions that have championed their health, dignity, and rights. One such leader is Fenway Health, a trailblazing organization with a powerful history of merging clinical care with social justice.

Founded in 1971 by a small group of volunteers, Fenway Health was created to serve the unmet healthcare needs of the neighborhood’s diverse and often marginalized residents. From the beginning, it embraced a vision of accessible, community-driven care, a philosophy that still guides its work today.

By the early 1980s, as the HIV/AIDS epidemic devastated the gay community and exposed deep flaws in the healthcare system, Fenway emerged as one of the first responders. It became a national leader in HIV research, treatment, and advocacy, offering not just care, but hope. Over time, this commitment expanded into a comprehensive, affirming approach to LGBTQI+ health, including services in primary care, mental health, behavioral health, and transgender care.

Today, Fenway Health serves over thousands of patients annually, operates multiple health center locations, and is home to The Fenway Institute, a globally respected center for research, education, and policy in LGBTQI+ health. Through initiatives like the National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Center and collaborative advocacy efforts, Fenway has helped train providers in culturally competent care.

Fenway Health’s story is more than institutional success, it’s a testament to the power of community organizing, resilience, and the belief that everyone deserves affirming, high-quality healthcare.

This Pride Month, we celebrate Fenway Health not only for the care it provides, but for the model it offers, a reminder that healthcare can and should be rooted in equity, inclusion, and compassion.
