A Day in the Life of a Pre-Medical Student at Northeastern University
Written by: Zoe Farkash
At Northeastern, we’re not just students—we’re future healthcare professionals in training. With a mix of rigorous classes and real-world experience, my days are anything but ordinary. Let me take you through my typical Tuesday, which is undoubtedly the busiest day of my week.
Early Morning: Rise and Shine
My Tuesdays kick off at 5:30 am, sharp. As a fitness junkie, I can’t imagine starting my day without some movement. There’s something about running along the Charles River as the sun begins to rise, the world still hushed and peaceful. Training for the Chicago Marathon has been a thrill, and these early runs set a positive tone for the day ahead. Post-run, I stretch, shower, and whip up my favorite breakfast: eggs and avocado toast. Fuel for the busy day ahead!
Mid-Morning: Dana Farber Cancer Institute
By 9 am, I’m out the door and heading to Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Walking through the bustling streets of Huntington, I feel the city waking up. At the lab, my tasks are varied. From caring for cells to purifying proteins used in CAR-T cell therapies, every moment is a learning experience. Some days, I dive into data analysis. After a productive morning, it’s time to head back to campus.
Late Morning: Community and Public Health Class
Back on campus, I attend my one and only class of the day: Community and Public Health. This class is great. It’s discussion-based, which means we get to dive deep into health disparities and brainstorm solutions for public health issues. The conversations are always enlightening and leave me with new perspectives to think about.
Afternoon: Study and Lunch Break
Lunchtime is a welcome break. I head back to my apartment, conveniently close to campus, and fix myself a fresh salad. The afternoon is dedicated to homework and study, a quiet yet essential part of my day. I immerse myself in assignments, prepping for upcoming classes and exams.
Evening: Volunteering at Horizons for Homeless
As the clock nears 5 pm, I quickly make dinner and get ready for my volunteering shift. At Horizons for Homeless, I spend two hours playing with the kids at the shelter. Their laughter and energy are contagious, and I find myself rejuvenated despite the long day. We swing, read books, and enjoy the simple pleasures of childhood. It’s a heartwarming and fulfilling experience that balances the intensity of my studies and work.
Night: Time to Unwind
After a day packed with activities, I finally head home. Tuesdays might be my busiest days, but they’re also incredibly rewarding. By the time I crawl into bed, I’m exhausted yet satisfied, ready to recharge for another day in the life of a pre-medical student at Northeastern.
