10 Things To Do Before ‘Leaving’ the Explore Program

by Abby Jones

An Explore Program Bucket List

Make a friend from your Connections and Decisions class

Your Connections and Decisions class is a great place to meet other students in the Explore Program. Since most students take the class as freshmen, you can probably meet some other people from your class or hall!

Change your class schedule

To this day, I still change my class schedule almost every semester. Sometimes it only takes two days of a class to know it’s not for you (I knew computer science wasn’t for me after one). That’s what the add/drop period is for!

Attend the Meet the Majors Fair

The Meet the Majors Fair is a chance to see every major in-person (or on Zoom!) in one event. Professors, TAs, and students attend and it’s a great chance to ask questions about major requirements, classes, and even graduate programs.

Complete a possible “Path to Degree” (or five)

Your academic advisor will help you fill out this worksheet in your Connections and Decisions class. The Path to Degree allows you to map out your entire degree experience as many times as you want. You can try out different majors and minors and see how many elective spaces you have left. It also gives you a chance to become familiar with the requirements of several different programs!

Attend a resume-writing workshop

The Explore Program generally holds one resume workshop per semester, put on by student leaders! I personally found this workshop to be one of the most helpful Exploratory events I attended. The leaders of the workshop gave great advice and offered to proofread our resumes.

Get some Explore/FUNdeclared merch

Most notably, the stickers and Camelbaks! Check out @/northeasternexplore on Instagram to find out how you can win some cool merchandise.

Attend Fall Fest and sign up for a club

As an Explore student, clubs are even more important to your college experience than most students because, in addition to just being a fun social activity, they can actually help you pick your major! There are tons of pre-professional clubs, cultural organizations, political clubs, and social clubs.

Get free lunch from 1 Meserve

Go hang with some student leaders and Explore advisors and get a free lunch! The Explore Office regularly hosts opportunities for students and student leaders to meet new people and socialize over lunch (usually from Qdoba!). Unfortunately, due to Covid, many of our lunches/activities have been moved online, but check your email and our Instagram to keep up with events!

Attend a College Conversation

College Conversations are hour-long lunches with faculty from different colleges. Each College Conversation focuses on 1-2 colleges. It’s a great chance to connect closely with faculty and ask questions about the major itself, the requirements, and co-op and career opportunities within that major!

Finally, declare a major!

This one is pretty self-explanatory. Once you declare a major, your Explore advisor will help you transition to the major program of your choice. You will get a new academic advisor within your major, but the Explore program will still be there for you – virtually or in 1 Meserve!
