4 Ways to Make the Most of Your First Semester in Boston

An Advisor's Perspective

Welcome to the Explore Program! We are so excited to welcome our new class of students for the Fall 2025 semester. My name is Jessica Pelz and I am one of the Academic Advisors. Today, I am sharing some ways you can take advantage of opportunities your first semester to support your transition to Northeastern and make progress on your major exploration journey.

  1. Attend Explore Program Events: One way to explore your major interests is to engage in the programming we provide throughout the academic year. Students can attend College Connection Fairs, Declared Student Panels, and Alumni Networking events. Keep an eye on our weekly newsletter for our events calendar!
  2. Schedule Advising Appointments Early and Often: Students can schedule meetings with any Explore Program advisor! We meet with students in-person in 101 Hayden and we can also meet through Zoom. Reflecting on your classes with an advisor can help clarify your academic interests. Additionally, we will help you to prepare for the next semester’s registration!
  3. Get Involved on Campus: Connecting with communities on campus is not only a great way to support your transition to Northeastern, but also helps with your major exploration! Are you a student with more academic interests than there are spaces for classes in a semester? Join a club in an interest area to get more experience and decide if you’d like to try out a class next semester.
  4. Ask Questions: We understand that it can be overwhelming to navigate a new educational system, and as advisors we can help you! When you have a question, you can always reach out to your advisors or Explore@Northeastern.edu for assistance. No question is too big or too small!
