Research Opportunity
Public Transit Visualization Developer
Opportunity Description

At the Transit Mobility Lab, we are currently conducting research on a variety of topics using extensive datasets and various models and simulation tools. We are looking for a paid hourly research assistant to help develop interactive, animated web-hosted visualization of the data and model outputs, e.g., show and animate the movement of trains on a rail network. Such visualizations can help identify bottlenecks, hotspots, and areas of improvement in the deployment of services and develop a platform for animation of simulation model outputs. This is a great opportunity to work with real public transit data and partner transit agencies.

We are looking for background in:
•UI Design: the visualization will need to have user controls, such as date/time selection, animation control tools (play, fast-forward, etc.), etc. Experience in CSS or Javascript is necessary.
•Webpage creation: the visualization is to be hosted on a non-public webpage and must be portable.
•Data visualization: knowledge of SVG creation/manipulation and related tools (e.g., d3, Cairo, etc.) is preferred, but other skills in generating universally compatible images/animations are acceptable.
•Databases: knowledge of SQL is required, as the data will be hosted on an oracle SQL database.
In addition, interest in and some background knowledge of transit/railroad operations will be useful.
