Opportunity Description

In support of the Northeastern University’s Impact Engine: Healthier Air and People: Intelligent Solutions to Urban Pollution for Equity and Resilience (HAP-iSUPER) (https://impactengines.northeastern.edu/ie/isuper/), we are seeking a highly motivated student to work with researchers in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northeastern University and stakeholders in the Town of Brookline, MA (Town) to develop links between transportation flows in the Town and associated air quality. The team is collecting traffic and transit data from various sources, including collection of new data from field campaigns, and plans to deploy air quality sensors at various locations in the Town.

The research opportunity is contributing to this highly interdisciplinary project through (1) investigation of transportation data (e.g. StreetLight data) to identify traffic hotspots and provide attribution to local and through traffic, evaluate transit coverage and bottlenecks, and assess impacts of transportation strategies and equity implications, (2) assist with the linkage to air quality data including matching important features in space and time, and (3) contribute to additional efforts related to collection of new data and contributing to understanding Town of Brookline priorities.

Responsibilities include: processing and analyzing transportation data; conducting impact analyses; evaluating strategies; relating traffic flows and air quality measurements; working with Town stakeholders; contributing to data collection; being flexible to assist with evolving questions and priorities as the project may require.
