You can apply for the McCall MacBain Scholarship in 2023 if you are planning to apply for Summer / Fall 2024 admission to a full-time master’s or second-entry professional undergraduate program at McGill University. The program must consist of 45 credits or more and take place primarily on McGill’s downtown or Macdonald campuses.

Master’s Degrees

MA (Arts), MArch (Architecture), MATL (Arts in Teaching and Learning), MBA (Business Administration), MEd (Education), MEng (Engineering), MISt (Information Studies), MM (Management), MMus (Music), MPP (Public Policy), MSc (Science), MScA (Science, Applied), MScAPT (Science, Applied in Physical Therapy), MScAOT (Science, Applied in Occupational Therapy), MSW (Social Work), MUP (Urban Planning), LLM (Law), STM (Sacred Theology).

Second-Entry Professional Undergraduate Degrees

Graduate certificates, executive master’s programs, PhDs, and joint degree programs, are examples of programs not covered by the McCall MacBain Scholarships. Qualifying-year students may apply at the start of their qualifying year for their upcoming master’s degree at McGill.

Applicants must meet the GPA (and other) requirements of their desired program at McGill.

You must apply separately and be admitted to an eligible graduate program at McGill University. You should review your desired program’s admission requirements, including but not limited to GPA, well in advance.

Keep in mind that one of the five selection criteria for the scholarships is “academic strength and intellectual curiosity”. We will look for evidence of this throughout your application, including transcripts.

The measure of academic strength is not limited to a narrow focus on GPA. While GPA is important, we are interested in the fit with your proposed graduate program, as well as the breadth and difficulty of the courses taken alongside your other commitments. Of course, we recognize that some programs offer more opportunity for breadth than others.

Applications are reviewed using the following criteria:

APPLICATION: To be considered for the university’s nomination, candidates must complete a full application for the award and share this as a PDF through our Northeastern Internal Fellowship Portal for our internal deadline. The application asks for the following:

  • Personal Information: At the start of the application, you will be asked for personal information about you and your family members.
  • Activities, Work Experience, and Breaks: You’ll be asked to share your community activities, extra-curricular activities, work history, and any breaks you’ve taken.
  • Short Essays: You’ll submit several short essays of 250-300 words each. Think of these essays as opportunities to reflect on who you are. Tell us about your goals, influences, meaningful experiences, and a significant “course correction”. You can expand on activities you listed elsewhere in your application or provide new examples. Make sure to tell us what happened. We want to know what your role was, what you actually did, who else was involved, and more.
  • REFERENCES: This internal application should also include the references you intend to submit to the scholarship program. You will need to ask for two references (one academic* reference from someone who knows your academic work well and one community reference from someone who knows your community involvement well). Login to the Northeastern Internal Fellowship Portal and register your references there — the system will forward them the appropriate forms — asking them to respond to the questions outlined here. These references must be completed by our Northeastern Internal Deadline.  Please ask people who know you well. A good reference provides concrete examples to help us better understand you, how you meet the selection criteria, current areas of improvement, and how your proposed studies might benefit your continued growth.
  • RESUME
  • TRANSCRIPT
  • Do NOT submit the application to the McCall MacBain Scholarship Program and do not enlist your references on the official application portal unless and until your application has been endorsed by the university.
  • REVIEW: After the application is submitted for our internal review, a committee of reviewers will nominate select students for this award opportunity on behalf of Northeastern.
