Two Northeastern undergraduates recently learned that they have received Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships. Sponsored by the US Department of State, the Gilman Scholarship supports undergraduate students who wish to participate in study abroad programs and other international learning opportunities. Read on to learn more about these remarkable Huskies.

Katherine Kikta DMSB’23

As an international business major and a cadet in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) at Northeastern, Katherine knows that a global perspective will be key to her future success. Katherine plans to study at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, where she will focus on improving her fluency in Mandarin while immersing herself in one of the world’s leading business hubs and a nexus of diverse languages, cultures, and religions. As a future Army officer, Katherine hopes to understand how Singapore’s unique geographical, political, and cultural situation promotes stability and prosperity in a region that is increasingly vital to US interests.

Hannah Nitta COS’23

Hannah is an environmental studies major who believes that our planetary challenges require a cooperative global response from academia and industry. Studying at South Korea’s Yonsei University will give Hannah the opportunity to see what the study and practice of environmental science looks like in a different cultural and linguistic environment. This global experience will also allow Hannah, a second-generation American, to deepen her language skills and her connection to her own cultural heritage, while representing the United States abroad. Hannah hopes that her study abroad experience will lay the groundwork for a future co-op in South Korea and ongoing personal and professional connections to the country.
