Three Huskies Win Gilman Scholarships

Three Northeastern undergraduates recently learned that they have received Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships. Sponsored by the US Department of State, the Gilman Scholarship supports undergraduate students who wish to participate in study abroad programs and other international learning opportunities. The students’ awards will be tenable for programs that start between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2021. Read on to learn more about these remarkable Huskies.

Bouchra Benghomari (COS’21)

A cell and molecular biology major with minors in global health and political science, Bouchra is fascinated by issues at the intersection of science, medicine, and policy. She plans to pursue both a doctorate and a medical degree and to focus her career on researching, treating, and raising awareness about diseases that affect less advantaged communities globally. Her interest in this work derives in part from her experiences observing the health system in Algeria, a country where her family has roots. Bouchra has been an active supporter of UNICEF since high school and serves as the youth representative of UNICEF USA New England. She hopes to use her Gilman Scholarship to pursue a study abroad opportunity in the global health field.

Zaneta Sulley (CSSH’22)

Zaneta, who is completing majors in criminology and sociology, has a passionate concern with issues related to race, poverty, and the criminal justice system in the United States. She plans to study abroad at the Instituto Lorenzo de’ Medici in Florence, Italy, an opportunity that will enable her to gain a valuable comparative perspective on the issues that most concern her. During her time in Italy, she is particularly interested in learning about the experiences of recent migrants to Italy vis-à-vis the country’s criminal justice system. She will also deepen her knowledge of Italian, which she initially studied during her first year at Northeastern. Zaneta ultimately plans to become a juvenile defense lawyer.

John Trapp (DMSB’23)

An International Business major, John hopes to use his Gilman Scholarship to take summer finance courses at the London School of Economics. He is drawn to study at LSE not only because of the rigorous coursework it offers, but also because of a longstanding fascination with London. John is particularly eager to explore London’s arts scene and the works of artists like Banksy and Stik. Upon his return from London, he plans to develop a program to encourage students from his high school in Brunswick, Maine to study abroad. He hopes to complete a co-op abroad and ultimately to work in corporate finance or private equity in London.
