Meet Northeastern’s Schwarzman Scholarship Nominees

This year, Northeastern University was proud to endorse three candidates for the prestigious Schwarzman Scholarship. The Schwarzman Scholarship brings outstanding young leaders from around the world to Tsinghua University in Beijing to complete an innovative one-year master’s degree program. Schwarzman Scholars live and learn together, fostering international and interdisciplinary connections, while gaining a deeper understanding of contemporary China and its role in the world.

Northeastern’s 2016 nominees for the Schwarzman Scholarship are:

An international affairs and history double major with minors in Chinese and social entrepreneurship, Caroline Fried brings extensive international and nonprofit experience to the Schwarzman Scholarship competition. Fried spent six months on co-op at the Dandelion School in Beijing, which serves the children of migrant workers, and also researched China-Taiwan relations via a Scholars Independent Research Fellowship. Fried’s leadership on campus, meanwhile, led to a co-op at Northeastern’s Center of Community Service and to her appointment as a peer mentor in the Civic Engagement Program. A University Scholar and member of the University Honors Program, Fried hails from Greensboro, NC.

California native Rose Leopold has used Northeastern’s unique experiential education model to both study and practice political science. From an independent inquiry into the subprime mortgage crisis, advised by Gov. Michael Dukakis and supported by a Scholars Independent Research Fellowship, and early involvement with political campaigns in the city of Boston, Leopold went on to co-op in the Washington office of Sen. Elizabeth Warren and at the US Embassy in Quito, Ecuador. Leopold’s final co-op was in the office of Northeastern’s Senior Vice President for University Advancement. A University Scholar and member of the Honors Program, Leopold will also receive a master’s degree in security and resilience studies in May 2017.

Honors Student Madeline Seibert’s dual majors in international affairs and environmental science reflect her belief that progress on today’s pressing environmental issues will require a global focus and global efforts. Seibert, who came to Northeastern from Bedford, MA, has focused particularly on issues of food, water, and soil. Through her work at local startup GreenerU, which promotes sustainable practices on college campuses, and as manager of the Roslindale Village Farmers Market, Seibert has translated her knowledge into appreciable local impacts. Moreover, while on co-op at the Natural Resources Defense Council in Beijing, Seibert shined a light on the issue of food waste in China’s supply chains. Seibert plans to continue her sustainability research and advocacy with international organizations.
