TRAPped in Translation: Optimized Astrocytic Ribosome Capture via TRAP Methodology for Translatome Sequencing
The Shout-It-Out Award (Conference Travel Award)

I was filled with happiness to step off the plane in Orlando and feel the humid air hug me. The stark difference from the frigid Boston weather excited me despite the red-eye flight on no sleep. I attended the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Annual 2019 Meeting as part of the Experimental Biology (EB) Conference. Here, I presented my work from my second co-op at the Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie (VIB) in Leuven, Belgium with a poster titled “TRAPped in Translation: Optimized Astrocytic Ribosome Capture via TRAP Methodology for Translatome Sequencing.”
It was a privilege to be amongst the greatest scientists and training students. I attended a total of 25 talks and poster sessions in the four-day span ranging from topics of epigenetics, stem cell regeneration, drug delivery, cannabinoids, and neurobiology. I presented twice and got amazing feedback that has already helped me formulate future poster edits and presentation skills. At this conference, I was also inducted as one of 33 across the nation into the National Chi Omega Lambda Honor Society which was a huge honor!
By attending this conference, I learned about different cutting-edge topics I didn’t get a deep exposure to during my courses. In addition to this, I have had many different suggestions scientifically in terms of my project set up such as the addition of different tests and various ways to display my data. Lastly, during the sessions I attended, I was thinking of potential PhD projects that bring together basic research in biochemistry with translational work in biomedical engineering.
