Tessa Griffin COS ’20 has earned the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship to study at the University of Sydney.

Tessa Griffin COS ’20 has earned the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship, an award sponsored by the US Department of State, to fund a study abroad experience at the University of Sydney in Australia. We asked Tessa, a Behavioral Neuroscience major with a minor in Marine Biology, to discuss her experience applying for the scholarship and her decision to study abroad.

What drew you to the study abroad program that you chose?

As a Behavioral Neuroscience major with a minor in Marine Biology, I was offered a short list of programs conducive to my STEM-oriented academic goals. The University of Sydney’s rich history and global prestige appealed to me greatly — what ultimately led me to this program is an unparalleled access to marine ecosystems. After researching Australian culture and attractions, I felt like it was a no-brainer.

What was your experience of applying for the Gilman Scholarship, and what would you like other students to know about the scholarship?

My experience of applying for the Gilman Scholarship included a detailed application that incorporated personal details, my academic capacities, and two essays. The application process was straightforward, since I began early and used resources from the Gilman website and the Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships at Northeastern. I tried my best to convey my passion and commitment to studying abroad through my essays. My advisor encouraged me to explain what types of opportunities I would receive in Australia that I cannot in Boston (i.e., studying marine biology at the Great Barrier Reef). I would advise other students to use the resources available to them!

How will this study abroad experience enhance your Northeastern education and contribute to your future career goals?

I would like to enter the healthcare field, ideally practicing medicine in a global setting. My experience in Australia will indubitably challenge me in new ways. I predict my personal character will develop greatly as I am pushed towards a new independence and maturity, living so far from home on my own. Additionally, I believe an open mind is key to success in any academic or professional setting. So, immersing myself in a new culture will help prepare me well.

Anything else you’d like to share?

The Gilman Scholarship has enabled me to experience Australia to the fullest. Without it, I would not be able to explore the country as much as I now plan to. I am looking forward to my semester abroad. Thank you to your office for all your help!
