Making A Graduate School Plan
Whether you want to go to graduate school in the US or abroad, earn a master’s or a doctorate, or work in the humanities, the arts, or the sciences–to make it happen, you need a plan.
We’ll walk you through the steps of identifying a right-fit graduate program and planning the who, what, when, where, and how of applying to graduate schools.
Eligibility: Those applying to master’s or doctoral programs in fall 2026 (to begin in 2027).
The Fulbright Fellowship: Global Ambassadorship through Study, Research, or Teaching
With a mission “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries,” Fulbright Fellowships fund a year of post-graduation study, research, or English teaching in over 160 countries around the world. Fulbright offers two distinct awards: the Study/Research Award, which supports independent research or graduate study in your field, and the English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Award, which places recipients in classrooms abroad to support English language instruction and engage with local communities. Both awards are open to students across disciplines, no formal teaching experience required.

Eligibility: U.S. citizens. No GPA requirements, open to all disciplines and majors.
The Luce Scholars Program
The Luce Scholars Program offers early-career leaders immersive, professional experiences in Asia. The Program aims to forge stronger, more informed, more compassionate relationships across geographic borders by creating opportunities for young Americans across diverse sectors and interests to deepen their ties and understanding of the countries, cultures, and people of Asia.
Application Deadline: September 7, 2026
Eligibility: U.S. citizenship. No GPA requirements.
The Princeton in Asia, Africa, and Latin America Fellowships
Though program specifics vary by region, the Princeton in Asia, Princeton in Africa, and Princeton in Latin America programs connect recent graduates with impactful organizations to make a difference through 1-2 years of direct work and changemaking in a wide variety of fields.
Application Deadline: TBD. Varies, From September 2026 Onward
Eligibility: No citizenship or GPA requirements, open to all disciplines and majors. Specific programs may have further eligibility requirements.
The Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships: UK Leadership Awards
The Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships fund postgraduate study in the UK for scholars and leaders who will dedicate their intellect and energy to the service of the greater good.
The Rhodes funds study at Oxford, while the Marshall supports study at any UK institution with a particular focus on ambassadorship. If you are not a US citizen, there are Rhodes Global (https://undergraduate.northeastern.edu/research/awards/rhodes-global-scholarship/) and Rhodes Jurisdictional (https://undergraduate.northeastern.edu/research/awards/rhodes-jurisdictional-scholarship/) competitions, as well.

The STEM Graduate Fellowships: NSF GRFP, NDSEG, GEM, and More
There are a number of STEM-focused graduate fellowships that can help you fund a research-based master’s or doctoral degree in these disciplines: the NSF GRFP, the NDSEG, GEM Fellowships, and more.

Eligibility: Varies by award, but typically U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents. No GPA requirements.
STEM Research or STEM Policy at Cambridge: The Churchill and Kanders Churchill Scholarships
The Churchill Scholarship funds an advanced research or study Master’s degree at Cambridge University’s Churchill College for outstanding American students in STEM fields. A great opportunity to explore your interests before heading for the PhD! The Kanders Churchill Scholarship funds a Master’s in Public Policy at Cambridge for a STEM background student who aspires to shape scientifically literate policy decisions.

Eligibility: U.S. citizens, must be a senior or have graduated within the past 12 months. No GPA requirements.
21st Century Leadership Awards: The Schwarzman Scholarship for Study in China and the Knight-Hennessy Scholarship
for Study at Stanford
The Knight-Hennessy and Schwarzman Scholarships seek 21st-century leaders in all fields who will tackle the world’s biggest challenges with a fully funded Stanford graduate education (Knight-Hennessy) or a one-year funded master’s, taught in English, at Beijing’s Tsinghua University (Schwarzman).

Ellison Scholars at Oxford University
The Ellison Scholars provides fully-funded doctoral (DPhil/PhD) study at the University of Oxford, where students directly contribute to progressing an EIT (The Ellison Institute of Technology, Oxford) project.
Application Deadline: TBD, Rolling through Fall 2026
Eligibility: No citizenship requirements, applicants must meet the grade requirements for their chosen doctoral course at Oxford.
McCall MacBain Scholarships at McGill University
The McCall MacBain Scholarships bring together exceptional students who strive to engage in positive change by taking on meaningful leadership roles. McCall MacBain Scholars connect with mentors and participate in an interdisciplinary leadership program while pursuing a fully funded master’s or professional degree at McGill University.

Eligibility: Applicants must meet the GPA (and other) requirements of their desired program at McGill.
