Northeastern Student Headed to Prestigious UK Fulbright Institute

Liam MonahanLiam Monahan CSSH’21 has earned a coveted spot at the Fulbright UK Summer Institute on climate change at the University of Exeter, where he and a small cohort of other American undergraduates will spend four weeks studying with top climate researchers and soaking up British culture in the historic cathedral city.

The Fulbright UK Summer Institutes are residential programs intended to introduce US undergraduates to the history, culture, and heritage of the United Kingdom via specialized study experiences that incorporate the strengths and environment of the host university. In addition to faculty from the University of Exeter’s world-leading Geography Department, this institute draws on specialists from the UK’s national weather service, the Met Office, which is headquartered in Exeter.

Liam, a political science major with an environmental studies minor, chose his course of study because he believes in the power of government to be a force for good, especially in mitigating the dire threat of global climate change. He has put his ideals into practice through involvement with the Husky Environmental Action Team and his co-op at the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, where he works to promote solar energy in the commonwealth. Liam hopes that the Fulbright UK Summer Institute—his first time outside the US—will deepen his scientific and policy knowledge while providing a unique social and cultural exchange.
