Fulbright Applicants Propose Global Research, Study, Teaching Projects

A record-breaking cadre of globally minded, civically engaged Northeastern students and alumni have proposed an impressive set of sophisticated, diverse, and consequential international projects for this year’s Fulbright Scholarship competition. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is America’s premier international exchange fellowship, with a mission to promote mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Through the Fulbright, awardees can study, conduct independent research, or teach English in over 140 countries worldwide. Reflecting Northeastern’s status as a global, experiential research university, our students and recent graduates have applied to pursue projects around the world and across a wide field of endeavor — read on to learn about these exciting projects.

Fulbright Study-Research Proposals
Fulbright Study-Research grants allow recipients to undertake independent research projects or enroll for a graduate degree in another country.

 Minhal Ahmed COE’19, Bioengineering
Ahmed proposed to undertake a project in Medical Sciences while in Australia. They hope to investigate how enteroendocrine cells of the gut communicate to the nervous system and mediate processes like nutrient sensing.

Daniel Russotto CCIS’18 is currently using a Fulbright grant to pursue the Master’s in Business Analytics and Big Data at Insituto de Empresa in Spain.

Anna Annino LAW’19
Annino proposed to undertake a project in Law while in Sweden. They hope to pursue a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Human Rights Law at Lund University.

John Bernard COE’19, Chemical Engineering, Minor in Mathematics
Bernard proposed to undertake a project in Engineering while in the Netherlands. They hope to enroll in the master’s degree program in Chemical Engineering, with a track in chemical product engineering focused on batteries and energy storage, at Delft University of Technology.

Carrie Brown COS’17, Chemistry
Brown proposed to undertake a project in Chemistry while in Australia. They hope to analyze the biogeochemical response found in sediment cores taken from of different sectors and zones of the Southern Ocean.

Audrey Cabral CSSH’17, International Affairs, Minor in Arabic
Cabral proposed to undertake a project in Public Policy while in the United Kingdom. They hope to study social issues facing immigrant and refugee youth while earning the MSc in International Migration and Public Policy from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Ashley Cryan COS’13, PhD’21, Ecology, Evolution & Marine Biology
Cryan proposed to undertake a project in Urban Development and Planning while in the Netherlands. They hope to pilot a study on resilience of the built and natural shoreline environments in the Port of Rotterdam.

Kasia Gibson COE’19, Electrical Engineering
Gibson proposed to undertake a project in Engineering while in France. They hope to pursue the master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, with a specialization in Data Analysis and Pattern Classification (Datapac), at Université Paris-Saclay.

Morgan Hines COS’19, Biology/English
Hines proposed to undertake a project in Language and Literature while in the United Kingdom. In pursuit of a research master’s at the University of Liverpool, they hope to use archives to investigate communications between physicians in Liverpool and the British colonies to discover how medical developments in Britain influenced the health of enslaved persons.

Jameson Johnson CSSH’19, Political Science/Communication Studies, Minor in Art History
Johnson proposed to undertake a Young Professional Journalist project while in Germany. They hope to create an online and print publication chronicling artists’ experiences of structural disparities within Berlin’s art scene.

Kestral Johnston COE’19, Environmental Engineering
Johnston proposed to undertake a project in Engineering while in the Netherlands. They hope to conduct a pilot study on the feasibility of naturally recovering and treating wastewater for reuse.

Hyun Sue Kim Bouvé’19, Health Science
Kim proposed to undertake a project in Public Health while in the United Kingdom. They hope to earn the MSc in social science research methods at Cardiff University while studying the prevalence of dating and relationship violence amongst young teenagers in Wales.

Isaac Kresse COS’19, Chemistry/Computer Engineering
Kresse proposed to undertake a project in Biology while in Germany. They hope to study the role of chaperone proteins in regulating the formation of aggregates of misfolded proteins in the brain.

Ryan Maia CSSH’19, International Affairs/Philosophy, Minor in Mathematics
Maia proposed to undertake a project in International Relations while in New Zealand. They hope to earn an MA in International Relations from Victoria University, focusing on New Zealand’s efforts to aid Pacific Island countries in building resilience to sea level rise.

Conor Messer COE’19, Bioengineering, Minor in Computer Science
Messer proposed to undertake a project in Engineering while in the United Arab Emirates. They hope to advance the development of soft robotic catheters to enable less invasive cardiac surgery.

Maxwell Meyers CSSH’18, Political Science, Minor in History
Meyers proposed to undertake a project in Urban Development and Planning while in the United Kingdom. They hope to pursue the MSc in urban and regional planning at the London School of Economics and Political Science, with the goal of remaking interurban transportation infrastructure in the United States.

Congtin Nguyen COE’19, Bioengineering
Nguyen proposed to undertake a project in Biology while in Germany. They hope to earn a master’s degree in regenerative medicine and biology at TU Dresden and to continue scientific outreach to young students in an international context.

Erin Norris CSSH’19, Political Science/International Affairs, Minors in Japanese, Asian Studies, History
Norris proposed to undertake a project in Political Science while in Japan. They hope to research social networks among the resident Korean (Zainichi) population in Osaka, Japan.

Joanna Odorisio CAMD’19, Communication Studies/Media and Screen Studies
Odorisio proposed to undertake a project in Marketing while in the United Kingdom. They hope to earn a master’s degree in marketing at Queen Mary University of London with a focus on developing ethical, effective strategies for global brands.

David Parker CAMD’13, Architecture
Parker proposed to undertake a project in Urban Development and Planning while in the Netherlands. They hope to pursue the MSc in Management of the Built Environment at TU Delft, specializing in healthy, net-positive, socially equitable development strategies.

Reid proposed to undertake a project in Urban Development and Planning while in France. They hope to document the ways gender underlies disparities in the construction of public space while earning the master’s in architecture from Paris-Val-de-Seine University.

Jackson Reimer CSSH’19, Politics, Philosophy and Economics
Reimer proposed to undertake a project in Economics while in the United Kingdom. They hope to earn the MSc in Health Economics and Decision Science from University College London with the goal of improving health outcomes through rigorous evaluation of healthcare systems and policies.

Donovan Richardson COS’19, Linguistics, Minor in Japanese
Richardson proposed to undertake a project in Urban Development and Planning while in Japan. They hope to investigate the role of bicyclists and bicycle infrastructure in the changing urban transit landscape of Utsunomiya, where a light rail line is currently under construction.

Zachary Rogers PhD’23, Chemical Engineering
Rogers proposed to undertake a project in Engineering while in France. They hope to develop a 3-D model of the liver portraying the interaction of the immune system with cancerous cells.

Kevin Ryan PhD’22, Marine & Environmental Sciences
Ryan proposed to undertake a project in Environmental Studies while in Chile. They hope to analyze the effect of the commercially important salmon fishery on levels of dissolved matter in freshwater.

Nicholas Salazar DMSB’19, International Business, Minor in German
Salazar proposed to undertake a project in Business/Management while in Ireland. They hope to earn the MS in Renewable Energy and Environmental Finance at University College Dublin to prepare for a career focused on financing the transition to renewable energy in rural America.
