Award Details
The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Graduate Fellowship Program (NGFP) is a full-time, salaried fellowship program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy for highly motivated graduate-level students interested in a career in nuclear security.
Working directly in NNSA offices nationwide, Fellows engage in a full year of:
- Hands-on experience in nuclear security and nonproliferation
- Career development, professional networking, and specialized training
- Extensive interaction and collaboration with security professionals and leading researchers
NGFP is administered by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and provides participants with training and practical experience that contribute to a safer world.

US Citizenship Required
Minimum GPA: 3.0
Applicants to the NGFP must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be eligible for security clearance based on position requirements
- Have a career interest in U.S. and global nuclear security
- Demonstrate maturity, good judgment, and self-motivation
- Have excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in an integrated and diverse environment
Education requirements:
- Be enrolled in a graduate program at the time of application, OR
- Have completed a graduate degree program within 12 months prior to the application deadline, AND
- Have a final and current cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 in the graduate degree program

NGFP fellowships are year-long, salary-plus-benefits positions placing highly qualified graduate-level students into hands-on assignments with the NNSA. Fellows contribute to a variety of nuclear security missions, including:
- Nonproliferation. Through the Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation, Fellows work closely with international partners, key U.S. federal agencies, U.S. national laboratories, and the private sector to detect, secure, and dispose of dangerous nuclear and radiological material, and related weapons of mass destruction technology and expertise.
- Stockpile Stewardship. Fellows work to ensure the Nation sustains a safe, secure, and effective nuclear deterrent through the application of science, technology, engineering, and manufacturing. The central mission includes maintaining the active stockpile, Life Extension Programs, and Weapons Dismantlement.
- Infrastructure and Oversight. Fellows contribute to the secure production and laboratory infrastructure that meet immediate and long-term needs. This work includes the people, systems, and processes necessary to succeed in the acquisition of both mission capabilities as well as products and services.
Each NGFP Fellow is assigned to a specific NNSA program or site office. During their year-long assignments, Fellows participate in a range of professional development, training, and networking opportunities with leaders from across the nuclear security enterprise. Actual events and activities vary by year.
The application consists of the following components (See the application tips and guidelines.):
- Part 1: NGFP Application Form including Letter of Interest and Résumé
- Part 2: An unofficial transcript from your current university must be submitted in PDF form. Please download these from your university in PDF, or copy and paste to Word, then save to PDF. Email the transcript to ngfp@pnnl.gov on or before the deadline. Note: If you are selected for an interview, you may be required to submit official transcripts at that time, but not until then.
- Part 3: Two letters of recommendation.The application system will solicit these via automated email, based on information you provide. You must submit at least two, but no more than four, contacts for recommendations. Two letters of recommendation must be received before your application will be considered complete.
- Part 4: Upload résumé copy to PNNL Upload a résumé to the PNNL jobs website (Jog ID# 306396). Use the same email address as you use for the NGFP Application System. Both the online form in the NGFP Application System and your résumé submission to the PNNL jobs website are required.
