About
Madeline Seibert studied international affairs and environmental science at Northeastern. She first became interested in spending time abroad in China while taking a Mandarin class her freshman year, and later studied Chinese language and culture at Nanjing University. Madeline is also deeply interested in environmental issues. She provided research support in English and Chinese at the Natural Resources Defense Council in China and participated in a cooperative learning experience at GreenerU, a startup that focuses on reducing the environmental impact of college campuses.
Madeline was the first Northeastern student to earn a Schwarzman Scholarship, which gives students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and professional networks through a one-year master’s degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing–one of China’s most prestigious universities. She will pursue a master's in public policy at Tsinghua and plans to undertake a career focused on addressing global resource challenges.

As a child, Seibert lived with her family on Kwajalein Atoll.
Year 1
Beginning an International Affairs and Environmental Science Double Major at Northeastern University
After completing high school in Bedford, Massachusetts, Madeline decided to attend college at Northeastern.
Year 2
Studying Abroad in Beijing, Nanjing, and Shanghai, China
Madeline’s interest in studying in China stemmed from taking Mandarin classes her freshman year. Abroad, she took rigorous and immersive language and cultural courses in several Chinese cities, participated in a homestay, and completed two internships.
Year 2
Testifying before a United Nations Mine Action Service Meeting
Madeline studied abroad at the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research in Geneva, Switzerland. She was the first university student to testify before a United Nations Mine Action Service Meeting.
Year 3
Participating in a Co-op at GreenerU
At this startup, which focuses on reducing the environmental impact of college campuses, Madeline led sustainability initiatives for several Boston-area universities.
Year 3
Participating in a Co-op at Roslindale Village Main Street
Madeline collaborated with Roslindale Village Main Street, a neighborhood non-profit, to market local events and merchants and guided businesses and residents to neighborhood and city resources.
Year 4
Participating in a Co-op at the Natural Resources Defense Council in China
Madeline provided research support in English and Chinese for NRDC projects, including China’s Coal Consumption Cap Plan, which is creating a policy roadmap for China to peak its coal consumption by 2020.
Year 4
Volunteering at Beijing Bamboo Bicycles
While working in China, Madeline—an avid bicyclist—volunteered at the start-up, Beijing Bamboo Bicycles.
Year 5
Earning the Schwarzman Scholarship
Madeline is the first Northeastern University student to earn a Schwarzman Scholarship. She plans to undertake a master’s in public policy and pursue a career focused on addressing global resource challenges.
